Web Capture
A record of a web page that holds up.
Not a screenshot. W3S loads the page in its own browser and keeps everything the server sent, byte for byte, then hashes it, signs it and timestamps it in the Bitcoin blockchain. Anyone you give the link to can check every part with free tools.
What you get for each page
- page.warc
- Every request and response the page made while it loaded, in the archive format the Internet Archive uses (WARC, ISO 28500).
- page.har
- The same traffic in the format your browser's Inspect panel saves and opens.
- screenshot, PDF, page
- What a person saw: a full-page screenshot, a PDF for the exhibit binder, and the page as one file that opens in Chrome.
- manifest
- The address, the time, the server's IP address and certificate, the browser, and the SHA-256 of every file.
- seals
- W3S's signature and yours, timestamps from DigiCert and FreeTSA (RFC 3161), and an OpenTimestamps proof anchored in Bitcoin.
What it will not do
- Capture pages behind a login. The Mac and Android app does that, in your own browser, with the same kind of record.
- Get around a site's bot protection or a CAPTCHA. Some sites refuse automated browsers; the page says so when it happens.
- Tell you whether a court will admit it. That is for you and the court.
